Oulton Broad Squibs Race Draws Biggest Fleet in A Century

Posted on 19 January 2012 by Mark

A weekend of perfect sailing weather drew the largest fleet of Squib sailing boats to grace Oulton Broad for a hundred years last Sunday.

The small boats are popular with enthusiasts, while their colourful sails make them a hit with spectators, and thanks to the efforts of the organisers, a great day was had by all. Three Squib races led to exciting contests between experienced competitive sailors and the new generation eager to give them a run for their money.

The only moment of confusion came after stewards accidentally sounded the start of the second race a minute early, leading to a brief period of chaos as boats were recalled and the race was reset. Kerr Sinclair and Owen Delaney led the aborted race, and were thrilled to win the second, legitimate start too.

With so many boats on the water, residents of Oulton Broad came out in force to see the keen competitive sailors do battle, and if the event keeps growing, this is one event that’s sure to be at the centre of the Oulton Broad calendar.

Oulton Broad Celebrates Green Flag Award for Nicholas Everitt Park

Posted on 25 July 2011 by Mark

The work by the people of Oulton Broad has paid off as Nicholas Everitt Park was awarded the Green Flag Status for being an outstanding green space

The scheme, run by organisation Keep Britain Tidy runs several awards including the Blue and Green flag awards. The Blue Flag status was recently awarded to the coastal area of Oulton Broad, and now it’s local park has achieved the green area equivalent.

As reported back in April by Love Oulton Broad, locals had been encouraged to donate some time into working on the park, with the aim of achieving the green flag award.

“The group are asking members of the public to volunteer to help with planting, building wildlife habitats, picnic areas and getting the park in Oulton Broad ready for winter.” (April 2011)

This work has certainly paid off and all of those that have put something into the park, can now celebrate at achieving something brilliant for their local town.

Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman Phil Barton told the EDP : “The importance of good-quality green spaces cannot be overestimated. They are central to the growth of our communities, both socially and economically.

“The Green Flag Award Scheme, and its growth, is essential in driving up the standards of our parks and green spaces. Access to quality green space is something we all desire and the scheme plays a key role in providing it.
“In these challenging financial times it is heartening that the number of Green Flag and Community Awards continues to grow. As the value of green space and the role it plays in our communities strengthens, we must ensure these high standards remain.”

This is a great award for Oulton Broad and is just another reason for the thousands of visitors that come to the Suffolk coast and it’s surrounding towns each year.

The Commodore in Oulton Broad could Re-Open

Posted on 08 June 2011 by Mark

The Commodore Pub in Oulton Broad met the fate of many pubs in the current economic climate, just under a year ago, yet plans are being made to re-open the building.

Enterprise Inn, a company which runs pubs across the UK, has put forward plans to refurbish The Commodore. The refurbishment includes the extension of the pub, to host more diners, new staircases, kitchens and toilets.

Another part of The Commodore, that has been paid particular attention to, is the improvement of the outside areas on the edge of the Broads.

The plans state, as in the Lowestoft Journal,

“There is a large terrace area to the rear of the pub that is split into three levels, which has now become very untidy and overgrown, and it is proposed to redevelop this terrace area with new hard and soft landscaping,”

Here at Love Oulton Broad, we have a detailed list of all businesses in Oulton Broad. Take a look at all of the Pubs in Oulton Broad, to quench your thirst until the re-opening of the Commodore.
