Last weekend saw the opening round of the British RYA Circuit Powerboat Championships hit Oulton Broad with a splash. Talented Youngster Ben Jelf, fresh from being crowned World Champion, secured the fastest qualifying lap with an incredible 53-second performance.

Jelf, who is only 11 years old, is aiming for the double glory of being both World and British Champion, and judging by last weekend’s performance, it looks like he’s off to a flying start. Ben took the lead from the off and held it against all comers, right down to the chequered flag.

Fifth Gear presenter Tiff Needell was on hand to present the prizes as hundreds of spectators cheered. Ben told Powerboat World: ‘Everyone raced really well this weekend and it looks like it will be a very exciting season with lots of tough races throughout the year. We’d been having problems with the engine in pre-season testing but I’ve got a great team and sponsors behind me helping every step of the way.’

A Lowestoft group have won the chance to wow the judges of Britain’s Got Talent after winning a public vote.

The TestostaTones, a five-piece vocal group, were selected through YouTube for the live show, where they will perform for Simon Cowell, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon.

The group is made up of Richard Ainslie, 31 of Carlton Colville, Stephen Amer, 34, of Toft Monks, Stephen’s brother Paul, 29, from Geldeston, Steve Clark, 28, of Lowestoft and Richard’s brother Bim Ainslie, 32, from Oulton Broad.

Sadly, their trip to the top was short-lived, as TV’s Mr Nasty himself, Simon Cowell, disagreed with the public vote, putting them down before they’d sung a note, saying “I’m not feeling great about this”.

The boys bravely sang their way through ‘Get A Job’ by The Silhouettes, before Cowell asked them to try another song. Sadly, their version of Steppenwolf’s ‘Born to Be Wild’ failed to impress and they were buzzed off.
